HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Friday: August 1st, 2007

On June 23, 2007, the Central Florida Chapter banded together with Habitat for Humanity to help build affordable housing for those who are less fortunate. Throughout their day the gentlemen followed the lead of Chapter President Chris Corn, Central Florida ’07, accomplishing a wide variety of tasks which ranged from laying sod to painting the interior and exterior of the entirety of the house.

This was a great opportunity for the chapter to get out into the community and practice their four founding principles. The most valuable of the four principles worked on this day was the diffusion of liberal culture; as the Central Florida Chapter worked with and befriended many different cultures. Through the promotion of friendship the chapter was also able to inspire a few juveniles that were attending the days work as a stipulation of their probation. As the day went on the crew chiefs thanked the chapter and the site chief invited the chapter to help again.

After helping Habitat for Humanity the chapter paused to discuss the day. It was put best that this was a day that all in attendance truly embodied the spirit of Delta Upsilon striving to build better men and build a better life for those around their community.

BOY SCOUTS OF C. FLORIDA

Friday: June 1st, 2007

In May, the Central Florida Chapter of Delta Upsilon helped the local Boy Scouts of America with their annual Family Fest. This event represents a year of hard work by Boy Scouts across Central Florida and includes the Boy Scouts of America’s philanthropy where forty scout troops raised over $400,000 dollars to help protect the youth of America.

Each troop organized events to raise money and the Central Florida Chapter helped with each tent. Events ranged from holding an alligator to building sailboats to working with leather and building rockets. The highlight of the day was when the brothers were challenged to a fitness competition (jump roping, sit-ups, and push-ups) by the scouts.

The Central Florida Chapter woke up early to set up the event for the Boys Scouts at a local park. Brothers participated in all events and also set them up and took them down. At the end of the day, the chairman of Family Fest thanked the chapter for their hard work and invited them to return back next year.

RELAY FOR LIFE

Friday: March 30th, 2007

The Central Florida Chapter of Delta Upsilon participated in Relay for Life helping to raise over $150,000 in the ongoing fight against one of the world's most deadly diseases, cancer.

At their tent they had Guitar Hero for Playstation 2 to help raise funds towards the overall collection of donations to the American Cancer Society. The event began at 6pm on Friday and ended at 12pm on Saturday morning and events ranged from a sub eating contest to a three legged race. The gentlemen of Delta Upsilon came out in force
bringing over 60 team members out to help fight the ongoing battle against cancer. Throughout the night there was football, ultimate Frisbee, mini golf and lots of Guitar Hero played to keep the well exhausted relayers awake and interacting with the survivors.

This is just one of the numerous philanthropies that Delta Upsilon has attended this year, with plans to do many other philanthropic events throughout the remainder of the year. This event hits close to home for many of the brothers of Delta Upsilon. One of the brothers was diagnosed with cancer and currently is winning the battle; additionally, numerous brothers have family members and close friends that have been diagnosed with cancer throughout the years. As a chapter, Central Florida feels that cancer is a disease that cannot be ignored and hopes that they can raise awareness regarding the fight for a cure.
